Africa Today
Africa is the second largest continent and covers 11,700,000 square miles (about 20% of the earth's land surface. It also holds about 10% of the world's population. The Sahara covers nearly the entire northern portion of Africa. The Nile River provides irrigation for farms in Egypt, a country of Africa almost entirely covered by desert.
Climate
Africa has a tropical climate, meaning mostly very hot during the day with rainfall seasonally. The very north of Africa has the most noticeable seasons. Fall and winter are cooler and wet while spring in pleasant and summer is hot and humid.
Plants
Orange and olive trees grow well in teh north. Oak, pine, myrtles and cork trees also grow in the north, but hte most common in the Sahara is the date palm, growing in groves near oases.
